ENERGY STAR qualified new homes have energy efficiency features that result in significant energy savings and improved home-owner comfort. The increased efficiency of these homes translates into reduced energy costs for homeowners.

About ENERGY STAR Qualfied Homes
An ENERGY STAR qualified home has an EnerGuide rating of 80 or better and typically contains ENERGY STAR products throughout the home. ENERGY STAR for New Homes initiative promotes guidelines that builders can use to construct energy efficient new homes. ENERGY STAR for New Homes uses the same logo as the familiar labeling program for appliances.

Typical energy efficiency measures for ENERGY STAR qualified homes include

  • Insulation upgrades
  • Higher-performance windows
  • Better draft proofing
  • More Efficient heating, hot water and air conditioning systems
  • Sealed ducts for improved air distribution
  • ENERGY STAR qualified appliances (where supplied by the builder)

Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan’s) Office of Energy Efficiency has promoted the international ENERGY STAR symbol in Canada and monitored its use since 2001. In 2005, NRCan expanded the ENERGY STAR initiative in Canada to include energy efficient new homes.
