ENERGY STAR For New Homes Initiative Launches in BC

Do you want to live in a home that is environmentally friendly, more comfortable and healthy, and will provide you with thousands of dollars in energy savings?

The ENERGY STAR® for New Homes Initiative is now available in BC, thanks to City Green Solutions, an enterprising non-profit specializing in building energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are 25% more energy efficient than those built to minimum provincial building codes, ensuring savings in energy costs for new home buyers.

"When looking to buy a vehicle, buyers can compare the fuel economy of various makes and models, and when buying a fridge, consumers can compare annual energy consumption. It only makes sense that buyers looking to purchase a new home should be able to compare the quality and energy efficiency of the largest purchase that they may make in their lives," explains Peter Sundberg, Executive Director of City Green Solutions. "The question is simple: do you want to live in a home that is environmentally friendly, more comfortable and healthy, and will provide you with thousands of dollars in energy savings?" asks Sundberg.

Typical energy efficiency measures in ENERGY STAR qualified new homes include energy efficient furnaces or heat pumps, above standard levels of insulation, and optimal air sealing and ventilation to prevent heat losses. Appliances and lighting, if included at the time of sale, should also be ENERGY STAR qualified.

While upcoming changes to the building code in BC will improve the energy efficiency of all newly constructed homes, the ENERGY STAR specifications will continue to advance beyond the building code, so that home buyers who choose ENERGY STAR will know they are investing in a 'best in class' energy efficient home.

"We fully support energy efficiency improvements in the building code as a way to help protect homebuyers and meet provincial energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction targets," says Sundberg.

"Diagnostic technology such as thermal imaging with an infrared camera and blower door air leakage testing can help builders improve their techniques to reach, and go far beyond, the upcoming building code requirements."

Interested homebuyers can ask their builders for ENERGY STAR qualified homes. Interested builders can contact City Green to become registered as ENERGY STAR qualified builders.

City Green is an enterprising non-profit organization licensed to provide the EnerGuide Rating Service and the ENERGY STAR for New Homes Initiative.
