Initial Home Energy Assessments
Home energy assessments are conducted by a Certified Energy Advisor who will introduce you to energy efficiency and grant information and answer any questions you may have about the best upgrade options for your home.
| In the first assessment, your Advisor will check the efficiency of your home's windows, doors, space and hot water heating systems, ventilation, and insulation. |  |
Using a Blower Door, your advisor will measure the air exchange in your home to find out whether your home is too leaky or too tight. |  |
While the fan is running, you can feel exactly where your home is leaking air. The average home built prior to 1980 has air leaks that add up to the size of a small basketball! |  |
| A safety check - called a Combustion Spillage Test - determine the risk of your home's exhaust systems pulling dangerous combustion gasses, including carbon monoxide, into the home. |  |
| Older heating systems may be wasting more than 30% of their fuel. Efficient systems convert up to 90% or more of their fuel source into heat, saving you energy and money! |  |
| Heat pumps are efficient electrical heat systems. Some require ducting but others, like the one in this picture, are ductless or mini-split systems. |  |
Heating water accounts for 18% of the energy use in an average Canadian home. Ask about the benefits of insulated pipes, or if a solar system would work for your home. |  |
Open wood fireplaces draw heated air out of your home and cause significant drafts. Fireplace inserts control the air flow more effectively. |  |
| Many appliances are using energy - even when they are turned off! Plug them into the 'SmartMeter' to find out how much energy is being wasted. Then, consider turning them off with a power bar instead. |  |
| Your Advisor will use the on-site assessment data to create an Energy Efficiency Evaluation Report of prioritized cost-effective upgrade recommendations - and to calculate your home's current and potential EnerGuide rating. |  |
After Your Home Energy Assessment:
- you choose your upgrades (you can get a grant for each eligible upgrade)
- you can do as many or as few of the recommendations as you choose
- you can work with the contractor(s) of your choice and/or do the upgrades yourself
- your Advisor and City Green Technical Services staff are available to answer any questions you might have about the LiveSmart BC grant requirements
- please save your receipts and/or invoices and present them at the follow-up assessment
Follow-up Home Energy Assessments
After your renovations are done, your Advisor returns to check the improvements you’ve made and calculate your new EnerGuide rating.
