Before construction, the builder works with a Certified Energy Advisor who evaluates the house plan and uses energy simulation software to estimate how much energy the house will use after it is completed. Tract builders often begin by evaluating a selection of plans to collect information about the impact various upgrades will have. After the initial evaluation, the advisor will work with the builder to develop cost effective energy efficiency upgrades for home buyers. These upgrade packages are sold the same way as other upgrades: marketed by the builder and selected by the home buyer.
After construction, a Certified Energy Advisor visits the house to verify its orientation, energy upgrades and airtightness. After this final evaluation, the builder will receive an EnerGuide rating label and an evaluation report to give to the home buyer.
The EnerGuide label can be displayed on the home's electrical box to demonstrate that an expert from the EnerGuide Rating Service evaluated the level of energy efficiency of the home.
